ICD-10 is an upgraded diagnostic and procedural medical coding system that is going to be implemented in the healthcare industry from October 1, 2015. This new coding system is different from the ICD -9 which is currently in use.
It is required now to start learning this new coding system as the healthcare industry will be transitioning from the ICD-9 code set and implementing the massive changes to the existing coding system. With the transition to ICD-10, in the United States, ICD-9 codes are segmented into:
ICD-10-CM replaces ICD-9-CM, volumes 1 and 2 and ICD-10-PCS replaces ICD-9-CM, volume 3.
